After undergoing any type of dental procedure it is very
important to follow instructions from your dentist. As a patient, your goal is
to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. Whether you just had a root
canal, a crown or bridge inserted or an extraction, you need to be extra
vigilant regarding your health.
Following your procedure your dental team should give you complete
instructions to speed your recovery.
Following a root canal, you will be sore for a couple of days. Do not chew on the side of the mouth of the root canal. You will want to give the temporary restorative material time to set. You will likely be given an antibiotic to treat any lingering infection in the tooth. If you notice an increasing amount of pain or tenderness or side effects to medication you should contact your dentist.
For a crown or bridge you will first receive a temporary restoration. It is not as secure as the final version, so be very careful when brushing and eating. You should brush the area very gently. Do not pull up on the tooth when flossing since it could become dislodged. It is also advised to avoid sticky or chewy foods while you have the temporary crown or bridge.
After having a tooth or teeth extracted you will need to rest. The site of the extraction may bleed for a little while after the surgery. Gauze will be applied to the affected gum area. If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours you should call your dentist. At home after the procedure, prop your head up on a pillow when lying down. Take pain medication if necessary. You can also use an ice pack for any pain. You may also consider using a cleaning solution to keep the extraction site clean.
