When you have an infected tooth that needs extraction or lose teeth due to injury or other circumstances, one popular treatment option is a dental implant. Implants replace missing teeth, making it much easier to speak and eat–not to mention greatly enhancing one’s appearance.
Just what is a dental implant? It really is nothing more than a titanium post surgically positioned into the jawbone. It is located below the gum line and allows the dentist to mount replacement teeth or a bridge in the area. An implant is a great option because it won’t come loose like a denture can. Dental implants also benefit general oral health, because unlike a bridge, they do not have to be anchored to your other teeth.
Before starting an implant, your dentist will assess the health of your gums. Healthy gums and adequate bone tissue are essential to begin the implant. If your bone is too thin or soft, it may not support the implant. In this case, you may need a bone graft before the procedure.
Since implants fuse with your jawbone, they provide artificial teeth the stable support needed for the procedure. Dentures and bridges mounted to implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth — this is a very important benefit when eating and speaking. This secure fit helps the repaired teeth feel much more natural than dentures or bridges.
After receiving implants, it is very important to meticulously clean all areas in the mouth, between the teeth and above and under the gum line. Brush at least twice daily and floss regularly. Also, if you are a smoker, it is strongly recommended you quit. Additionally, avoid chewing hard candy or ice to prevent damaging or breaking the implants. Implants can last for many years with proper care.
