What Is Gentle Dentistry?

Sep 29, 2023

It can be difficult to find a dentist who makes you feel comfortable. Sometimes, visiting a private practice offers you a more customized experience. According to Dental Assistant Schools, 73% of dentists in the U.S. own their own practice. Many of these dentists also realize that dental phobia is a real thing, which is why they practice something called gentle dentistry. Here are some facts about gentle dentistry:

Puts the Patient at Ease

This starts from the very second that the patient walks into the office. The staff should warmly greet them and help them get set up. The entire office should give off a warm, inviting vibe. Photos on nice-colored walls is one helpful suggestion. The hygienist and dentist should be kind and personable. This is all by design to help the visit start off on the right foot. From there, it's time to get into the dental chair.

Makes the Appointment Stress-Free

Now it's time to help the patient relax in the chair. They may have been given a mild sedative to relax beforehand, or they can have it in the chair. The hygienist can also apply a topical anesthetic to the gums to make sure that there is no pain while they are doing the cleaning. They may play music or have a TV in the room to help distract the patient. It's all about making sure that everything goes smoothly.

Involves a Conversation

Afterward, the hygienist or dentist can explain things in an easy-to-understand way for the patient. They can encourage them about what they are doing right and give some pointers on what they can do to improve certain areas. Afterward, it's time to make another appointment.

One reason that people avoid seeing the dentist is because they get nervous. This is not good, because there are conditions that can occur even when you are brushing and flossing your teeth normally. You might miss a spot, which will then lead to bacteria forming plaque. That plaque can harden and become tartar. The tartar gets under your gums and leads to gum infections. Worst of all, the bacteria can get into your bloodstream and cause other conditions like cancer and heart disease. That's why it's important to see the dentist twice a year, and the gentle dentistry can help keep both your smile and your body remain healthy.
